A beard trim is mostly a decision about two lines. The cheek line sets how high the beard sits on the face; the neck line sets where it stops underneath. Length and bulk follow from those two, and getting them wrong is what makes a beard look untidy straight after a trim. Your barber agrees both with you before anything comes off.

The work then runs in that order. The shape is set by eye rather than to a guard number: a beard follows the jaw, and no two jaws are alike. The length is evened through next — clippers on a short beard, scissor-over-comb on a longer one, bulk taken out of the cheeks and the ends levelled. The difference from a cartridge is mechanical: one sharp edge cutting the hair level with the skin in a single stroke, rather than three blades dragged twice over the same patch — so it finishes closer and pulls less. Every shave uses a fresh single-use blade.

Between visits, the two lines are the thing to leave alone; those are the ones people creep upward on at home, and once they are off it takes weeks to bring them back.
